Strobe LED wheel lights

Someone asked me if you can buy a kit which uses a strobe effect with an LED to create the illusion that your car wheels were moving at a different speed than they were really moving.

I found a patent for this idea, so I'm sure that many people have thought about doing it, however, the only commercial implementation that I have found is hokeyspokes for bicycle wheels although MHT wheels had an automotive demo at SEMA and are supposed to be releasing a version to the market mid 2005 under the DUB brand.

There are several valve mounted LEDs which flash but it's not clear if these flash at variable speed depending upon the rotational speed of the wheel nor is it clear exactly what visual effect these provide.

UPDATE UPDATE!

Dub Custom Wheels now supplies the PimpStar LED persistence of vision, POV, custom wheel. The features include animated LED action as well as the display of multiple static images while the wheel is in motion. More details available at customwheel.com:

Have fun adding LEDs to your wheels but make sure you check the local laws relating to vehicle lights, if you have any comments please let me know and if you have any other questions which you'd like me to answer for free please send them to Ben Dash at ben.dash@gmail.com

The pimpstar product cost about $15,000. You can get BlingX for around $25 retail. www.blingx.com the web site has video of the BlingX strobe LED wheel lights in use.
